The four-part series will be shown on the BBC in collaboration with the production company behind Sex Education, Eleven Film. Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Enola Holmes) has written the screenplay from William Golding’s classic novel.

You will no doubt be familiar with the book, in which the boys, all from unspecified prep schools in the 1950s, are stranded without adults on a remote tropical island. Complex power dynamics between the various characters develop swiftly, and with horrific consequences. The shoot will take place in Australia between April and September 2024.

In total, 23 boys from Years 5 and 6 auditioned for the various parts. Thank you, parents, for helping them to learn the short script over half term. They were all word perfect by Tuesday, and we were impressed by how quickly they learned to read to camera, do an Ident, and repeat a take or two.

The casting brief required leading roles for boys aged 10-12 years old. After auditioning thousands of children for the BBC Drama Series, Lord of the Flies, our amazing thespians, Zain, Rico and James were invited to the next stage of the audition process, with Zain reaching the finals and auditioning for the role of Piggy. The scheme aims to ignite the creative spark in children and build the next generation of budding entrepreneurs while supporting in key areas of the national curriculum, specifically around Maths, English and PSHE. As ever, Forest pupils have applied themselves with aplomb.

Mr Lander and Mr Clements spent their Sunday on a rather cold Wanstead High Street supervising the various ‘shifts’ of Y5 and Y6 pupils as they sold their wares to the general public.

The target was to beat the £530 in sales they generated at Lloyd Park back in the summer. We are delighted to say that our hustling entrepreneurs comprehensively smashed through this, achieving revenue for the day of £636.50 by 3pm!

Next term we’ll be aiming for the big 700!

Forest School has recently been awarded a Gold Green Tree Schools award by the Woodland Trust for getting involved and incorporating green activities throughout the curriculum within the Preparatory School.

The Green Tree Schools initiative, which has seen more than 12,000 schools sign up since it was launched in 2008, offers the opportunity to bring the great outdoors, wildlife and green issues into the classroom.

Since September, pupils and teacher’s in our Preparatory School have been working towards becoming a Gold Green Tree School by completing exciting activities and challenges set by the Woodland Trust.

Our Reception classes have been visiting the woodlands regularly as part of their ‘Little Foresters’ sessions led by Mrs Arnold, who is completing her Level 3 Forest Schools qualification. They spend an afternoon outside every week and take part in den building, team games, natural arts and crafts and outdoor imaginative play.

In Michaelmas term, a group of our Pre-Prep children became ‘School Woodland Ambassadors’ by exploring, investigating and learning about the different trees and wildlife located in our woodland learning area, Little Acorns. They created presentations on what they had learnt and shared their knowledge with their peers during a Pre-Prep assembly.

The Year 5 boys took part in the ‘Tree Champion Challenge’ that started out with an exploration of the local woodlands, and a discussion of the importance of trees to different people in society. They thought of the wildlife that might need protecting in the woodlands and used their imaginations to create ‘Tree Champions’ who advocate and protect these animals.

In the Trinity term, the Year 6 pupils extended their knowledge of Shakespeare to explore the taxonomy of the woodlands, as well as how the natural world inspired ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Afterwards, they turned the ‘Little Acorns’ area into an outdoor theater and created and performed short drama pieces to their peers.

Over the next academic year, the Preparatory School will be aiming for Platinum! There are plans for two big projects that will involve all the pupils from Reception through to Year 6, focusing on different perspectives of the woodlands around us.

Laura has taken the lead and is already well on her way to qualification as a Level 3 Forest Schools instructor and a number of additional staff are interested in taking on the considerable training burden.

We have also been lucky that the Bursar was able to facilitate the transformation of part of the Park into a fantastic Forest Schools working area that has been dubbed Little Acorns in reference to the quote used in the 175^th anniversary carving in Chapel, “Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns grow”.

The first classes started in Week 2 and have become a highlight of the Early Years’ week. Over the year this will be rolled out to the rest of the PP and PS and last half-term PP and PS pupils also used the space for activities within our Maths Week.

As yet we are not ‘qualified’ use fire or tools, but these rapidly become part of the whole educational process as our instructors receive the appropriate training and gain the necessary experience.

This is a remarkable achievement and something no Forest pupil has qualified for before.  IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) swimming is the largest annual Prep School gala in the UK. Nearly 4500 swimmers compete across 34 qualifying galas and only the 20 fastest competitors in each event get through to Nationals.

During the day, Havas advertising agency ran a competition for students to design a billboard to promote Healthy Eating where one of our Year 4 Students Scarlett submitted a winning entry.

Scarlett’s entry has been transformed into a digital image and was displayed on a billboard in Kilburn, West London on Friday 20^th April.

Scarlett was able to visit the billboard on last week to see her work on a grand scale.

Yoga instructor Miss Wilde relished the opportunity to take over the Dance studio on the top floor of the Martin Centre for Innovation to introduce our 10 brave Yoga pioneers to the ancient art.

Enjoying glorious views over the playing fields, the boys and girls were able to focus on their inner zen and learn the beginnings of what may become a life-long passion! Feel that Downward Dog…

This year, 126 children from Years 2 – 6, performed in the concert including a joint choir of 92 children who entertained the audience with their take on Richard Stilgoe’s Building.

All of the Prep School ensembles also performed guided by their instrumental teachers, who have in recent weeks been busy preparing the pupils for the big night.

Pupils Emma, Uzair, Molly, Kaitlin and William all gave fantastic solo performances taking inspiration from the classical, popular and musical theatre gentres.

Speaking about the concert, Prep School music teacher Miss Butler said: ‘The concert was a great success, thank you to all the children who took part.

‘It was been great working with you and having fun making music this term’.
